well it won't let me unistall the other ones anyways. just tried. I can't even install the 3.5 .net framework. I'll try after restart...... What about my other problems? Got any comments on them? So far I must say I'm unimpressed with the service of GFWL.
I'm going to have trouble helping you without specific error codes and a screen shot of the error you're getting. What exact steps are you taking and what happens when you take them? Have you tried the steps listed in the FAQ with regards to opening ports in your router, turning off your firewall, disabling software that could cause problems, etc.?
The only firewall i have on my computer is windows firewall, which is disabled. I have not tried opening ports in my router either, because the add on downloads fine, and nothing else besides GFWL has this problem. As for errors I'm getting, after downloading, I get the hex error "Can’t install item (0x800B0003)." I tried downloading the hotfix, but when I try to install it, it says that my "updatebr.ini" file is invalid. I searched for this file to see if maybe it was replaceable, but it seems there are many of them on the computer. As for the error when unistalling .net framework 2.0 service pack 1 and .net framework 3.0 service pack 1 (or service pack 2, can't remember and not at home), it says that the files can't be installed because they are needed by applications on the computer. I figure they must be necessary.
I have also tried suggestions off the technical support page, like re downloading 1 at a time, removing all local files and trying again after restart, and finally reinstalling the program after updating to .net 3.5. Unfortunately, after installing .net 3.5 and reinstalling GFWL, the GFWL client won't even let me log on. Says "GFWL could not connect to the internet. Please check your internet connection and try again." BUT msn messenger and other microsoft services are working fine. Thats about everything excluding screen shots. I have also contacted Xbox LIve support via e-mail and they have been no help whatsoever thus far. Your help is appreciated.
Unfortunately no amount of being able to connect in any other program has even the slightest bearing on being able to connect via the in-game client or the Games for Windows - LIVE application as they both use sign-in methods different from both one another and from other applications. The issue you're referencing (the 0x800B0003 error) is related to that Windows XP hotfix, so your inability to install that is ultimately your problem, and resolving that should resolve your issue.
Now, I see you're using XP 64, are you trying to apply the 64 bit version of that hotfix? When you download the hotfix, what name does it give?
Just letting you know, I'm still here, though I gave up on trying to fix fallout 3 for a while. GFWL still won't connect to the internet, and I'm talking the out of game program, not the in-game client. Have they released a xp 64 hotfix for GFWL yet? If so could you post a link? I'm really tryin to stay positive here, but honestly, I've become wary about buying games that have anything to do with this service. I recently purchased DOW II, but it locked up on the start of the single player campaign, so I went to bed. I'm hoping its not related to GFWL, but I would like to try to get the service running to see if it fixes the problem. I'll try to play it again in the meantime. Thank you for your continued support and sorry you have to take so much heat for something thats not entirely your fault.
Does the in-game client connect and it's just the out of game client that does not? That shouldn't effect your gameplay experience except in instances where you want to purchase DLC or something.
Neither client connects to the internet. When this all first started it worked fine. Then after the hex error related to not being able to install the DLC(refer to previous post), I uninstalled and then reinstalled GFWL. After that, it coudn't connect to the internet, and therefore, the program won't start. I get "Can't start the program. There may be a problem with your internet connection or live service. etc. etc." Internet works. Going to the help page, i've installed the x64 hotfix, and added the GFWL client to my windows firewall excetpions. What am I missing?
BTW the in game client starts but doesn't connect to the internet. I can play games single player, but cannot join the GFWL Network.

It is because you will not address your ports issue.

Also try refreshing your TCP stack and Winsock
Did you install a new antivirus?
But my networking is working fine. I have now problems connecting to the internet or steam client. If you still think i should do this then i will, but note that this all started when i installed windows .net framework 3.0. And no, no new antivirus installments at any time during this problem, before or after. I have even moved to a new place, which means i have switched routers, and cable modems but the problem persists. I have done the required port forwarding, udp 3074, tcp 3074, udp 88. I have them enabled on my router. Do i need port triggering? I use a linksys wrt54g if that helps. no firmware updates. I appreciate all your help and hope that together we can get this working. thank you.

Completely uninstall your .net framework. All of it.
Then reinstall it from the ground up, making sure you install the updates for each one first before moving on to the next version. Sounds like you have a corrupted .net framework and this happens
And 9 months later...... WE HAVE A WINNER!!!! This fixed it all the way. After reinstalling .net framework, GFWL seems to work great. Add ons are downloading and installing fine. Just have to try the game and make sure. I should've tried a little harder to remove the framework before. Had to use a separate program to remove the framework, because add/remove programs would not work.
Thank you hotchilli1327. You were knowledgeable, and very responsive. Your help is much appreciated.

You are very welcome and I am glad you were able to get your problem resolved espescially after so long.
If you have any other problems just let us know.
GFWModerator: Ideally you should only have the one, the old ones should be uninstalled and only the new one present.

Old .net framework will still be there because other programs still use them like browsers for example. For .Net Framework it is always advisable not to uninstall any of the versions.
