Hi i have a Laptop and a Desktop PC and i am connecting to the internet over WLAN. However i dont have WLAN at my desktop PC so i tried to use the WLAN of my Laptop via ICS (The windows integrated Internet sharing tool). While this works quite nicely with almost all aplications, somehow i cant login into Windows Live. Now I checked the Ports and if i am not mistaken TCP 443 is the one for the login i opened that port in the ICS options (and all the other port that where in the FAQ in this forum as well. And i still cant login into Windows Live. I would really appreciate any help.(the specific game i tried was the Dawn of War II Beta and I am running Vista SP1)

PS No i cant plug my desktop PC into the router as the router is somewhere else

PPS Oh it works fine if i try to login to windows life over my laptop (with out using ICS)

the simple answer is abandon this method and get a wireless nic for your PC. Ever since ICS was introduced it was unreliable.

Considering a wireless nic would cost about US$20 or so this will work better

I actually have a USB wireless adapter however apperently it isnt strong enough to pick up the signal.

And i have to say that ICS really works quite well and without to much problems (for example i can play over Steam without any problem) and additionally i am really interested in getting it to work (just because i like tinkering). So if any additional help would come at i would still be quit thankfull.

if your having problem with signal strength then you need a more powerful antanae. one in the 5ghz range maybe.

However as always the best solution would be to run cat5 from your router to the desktop. a physical connection is always faster.

There was an article in Popular Science about connecting the Xbox 360 wirelessly via Laptop.  Can't find the link though.

Well i actually would be interested with why it is not working over ICS. Weather it is beacuse i did something wrong with the prots or anything. My guess would be that Windows live thinks i am only in local area network and hence it doesnt even try to connect to the internet.

PS If i am not mistaken my USB wireless adapter has 5 Ghz (i think that depends weather it has 11.b as an option and it has that)

Your scenario should work just fine.  There are a few things that might be causing issues though:

1. Make sure UPNP is enabled on your ICS box and your client.  (The steps for doing this vary based on what the OS is.
2. If you are also using the ICS box as a gaming machine and have signed into Live on the ICS box itself, there are known issues with the ICS clients failing to "steal" the needed ports from the ICS box (since they are all sharing the same actual internet connection).  In that case, you can try overriding your LIVE port on either the ICS machine or client machine (or both) as described here:
http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Support/Pages/troubleshootingIssues.aspx

If that doesn't help, please give us more information:
1. What is the error?
2. What OS's are you using?
3. What about your router?  What make/model is it?  Is it certified for Xbox Live?
4. Do you also use an Xbox360 on this same home network?  Does it log in OK?

The error message is that either the LIVE server is unavailable or i have problems with my firewall.

I can conncect to windows Live if i use the aforementioed USB wireless adapter however this is not an option since i loose connection every 5 min or so because the USB adapter is to weak to pick so signal from my router up properly. (but at least that should make clear that the router is not causing the problems).

I dont use my ICS box for windows live and never have and i also dont have an XBOX.

I use Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 installed.

And as mentioed other programms like Steam run just fine.

The Game in question was the Dawn of War II Beta wich i also use over Stream.

(EDIT)

OK have checked that UPNP is on and it is on.

The most likely problem seems to me that i did something wrong with the options for ports. I will try to describe what i did (its diffcult since i am not sure about the correct translations since i use a german windows)

1. I ticked the box that enables the ICS on my wireless connection

2. I ticked the box that allows other useres to activate and deactivate the connection.

3. I first try to acces the windows live. didnt work.

4. Then i went into the settings of the ICS and chekced weather the ports are allwoed. I then entered manually those ports that werent allready in the list.

Now what i am not sure is what i am supposed to enter in the option "Name or IP adress of the PC where the serives or Network is to be executed". I entered my Laptop (thats the PC i use ICS on), should i have entered my Gaming PC there ?
