Most connection issues are related to a few different problems:1) Verify that all ports are opened (Port list available further down this post) or circumvent the router entirely by connecting directly to your modem*.2) Ensure that allowances have been made in your firewall or circumvent it entirely by disabling it*.3) Make sure no programs are running that could interfere. This could range from security programs like Norton Internet Security to anti-virus programs*, or simply other programs such as xfire or hamachi that seem to have some issues running simultaneously.* These steps are provided as troubleshooting assistance. We do NOT advocate running at all times in the DMZ mode or without any sort of firewall or anti-virus. Once you have verified where the problem lies, then you will want to take steps to allow the program to work WITH your security software, not leave it out of the loop forever. How to check the status of Windows Live ID (sign in) and LIVE servicesA service may be down, which will prevent you from accessing the LIVE services or sign in. Some users get this issue when they have xfire running while trying to sign in.
yes it solved the problem TY...
I have run into a problem that is confusing me. I can log in on Fallout, but i cannot get onto the GFWL off-game client. I continue to get the same "Connection Error."
In the right corner does it show the correct gamerscore or reputation for your gamertag. If it doesn't, or your downloads say any type of medadata error. Then your computer time is not in sync with internet time. Double click the time. Navigate to the internet time tab & update with time.windows.com. If you get a error updatinng it, then check your bios. Edit it for current date/time & try again the update again in windows.

Sorry, could not edit. Keep getting alot of errors lately with the forum.
That wasn't the problem, though that is because of a lack of information on my side. In the end GFWL wasn't the only problem on my comp and i just decided to reformat. It did fix the problem, and many others I had been having with other internet interfaces (like Steam.)
Just a note for personal (software) firewall users users: Some firewall solutions will block traffic from the local Router/Gateway. My SEP 11 was set to allow the appropriate TCP and UDP port traffic, but there was a global deny on most other incoming traffic, which superceded the port "allows" and blocked traffic from my 2wire gateway/router/firewall. I found this looking through my firewall logs.
GFWL requires that traffic be allowed from the router back to to the PC (obviously). Wether this is allowed through an entire subnet, range, or specific IP, it would be a good idea to allow the incoming connections to your PC from your gateway (again, obvious). I had to specifically allow traffic from the IP of the gateway (my 2wire router).
Since my router firewall blocks most incoming traffic, I feel comfortable allowing all traffic from it to my PC. For security reasons, I would sugest allowing traffic only on those required ports only from the gateway.

I have the same problem but I don't have XFire. Any Ideas? the game is fallout 3 rather than GTA IV.
Same problem here, I unlocked the ports and shut off xfire and still the same...
