If I contracted a company to provide software for my business and got this kind of garbage, I would freaking cancel the contract and make sure that everyone I knows avoids this like the plague.

I just spend 5 hours going through forums and trying all sorts of junk.  Uninstall this, reinstall that, clean install of this, and it's just utterly non-transparent CRAP!

Why the hell fix what isn't broken?  It doesn't require some kind of crazy software to run on top of a game to manage dlc stuff!  Bethesda should have just stuck with the old model of having people buy a download, they download it, put it into the correct folder and there you go!  This is stupid!  I've uninstalled and reinstalled stuff for hours now and after FINALLY, FINALLY getting Fallout 3's live button to do something so I can sign in, the DLC stuff I paid for and downloaded aren't there!

I checked the hidden folders of GFWL and the downloads are gone!   I have to redownload them again!

I have programmed software for a major research project of the freaking European Union, something for the use of research groups across several universities across the world.  I'm well above the average for computer experience, I'd say.

This GFWL is *** programming.  It's utterly non-transparent junk.  Why complicate a simple transaction of spending money, downloading a file, putting it in the right folder and having it work the way it did in, say Oblivion?  This cluttered junk that's supposed to simplify the transactions and automate stuff adds unnecessary overhead to a single player game, and is ridiculously hard to troubleshoot!  I am NEVER BUYING ANOTHER GAME THAT USES WINDOWS LIVE.

Iam just tired of hearing this same rubbish over and over again.

I won't buy anything that uses windows live or steam or impulse or anything. Just hearing this same crap over and over again is freaking annoying.

You people are just impatient.

Impatient???  I've spent several HOURS in a row trying to troubleshoot this - have gone through 5 separate forums on different pages, uninstalled, reinstalled, messed with ports AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK!

What the hell does patience have to do with a totally unnecessary product?  All that's required is an ordinary secure website where you pay, download something and install it in a transparent way!  WTF do we need freaking GFWL which adds extra overhead, is unnecessary for a single player game like Fallout 3, and IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TROUBLESHOOT!

I've tried changing the update order, tried patching, not patching, reinstalling, redownloading the dlc...  WTF DOES PATIENCE HAVE TO DO WITH IT?

It's a crap product that overly complicates what should be a simple process!

What is difficult to understand about the FACT that this is a CRAP product?

1) It is a bloated, feature heavy POS that adds a ton of obfuscatory layers on top of what SHOULD be a very simple process!

2) I'm obviously only one of MANY people having problems with it!

Doesn't that mean it's a LOUSY product?

Yea.

GFWL might have problem. Tell me which software does not have problems?. They employee at MS are Humans and Humans are bound to make mistakes.

MISTAKES???  The Fallout 3 DLC packages have been available for MONTHS!  They've had plenty of time to iron out the bugs!

Again, what it boils down to is that GFWL is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY FOR FALLOUT.  It would be much simpler, take fewer programmers, AND cost less to maintain if Bethesda gave up on this stupid partnership and had their own straight transaction based website where people can buy the DLC, download it and install it instead of relying on over-engineered bloatware!

I'm normally very forgiving of Microsoft because an OS has to do so many things and their other products are very complex multi-purpose packages - but THIS?  This is so unnecessary!  It's like trying to reinvent the wheel for a wheelbarrow and hiring MIT grads to do it!

I have friends that could write a secure transaction site and a database backend for it and get it working in a tiny fraction of the time I've wasted trying to get GFWL to mesh with Fallout 3

Although I'm also getting tired of all this complaining, this isn't a very good argument. If I got my car back from the shop and it turned out it wasn't properly repaired, would I have to become a mechanic in order to fix it myself?

Many people on this forum have had no or very few problems with the client, but others have. If the latter would just post normally and explain what their problem is, we could very well lend them a hand. Just screaming that it doesn't work and that it's crap get us nowhere.

Yeah, sure.  What a great place to work.  GFWL's GM got fired just a few months ago...

What you're saying changes nothing about the fact that GFWL is totally unneeded extra junk for what it's purpose is in Fallout 3.  It has all these stupid features that make it ridiculous to figure out when there are problems, when AGAIN, all that's needed to do everything that it does is a simple website that offers downloads for simple point of sales transactions!

Do you have a problem you want solved or do you just want to complain?

Before posting here, I have tried literally every suggested solution on these forums that applied to my situation.  My situation???  GFWL will not mesh with Fallout 3.  Early on, after patching and downloading the DLC with the client, I still couldn't see it.  When I'd click on Live in the game menu, nothing would happen.

Since then, I have:

0) Shut off my antivirus and added exceptions to the firewall (this includes running as an administrator, and the parental controls are off)

1) Uninstalled Fallout 3 and reinstalled it on the same drive as the GFWL client

2) Uninstalled GFWL and reinstalled it and Fallout 3 (including a deep uninstall that removed everything, necessitating re-downloading the DLC)

3) Tried logging in before patching

4) tried logging in after patching

5) messed with the ports on my router

6) Tried the UK patch instead of the US patch

7) repeated all these attempts with different iterations!

AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK.

In comparison, in other games, you buy the content with a simple point of sales transaction off of a secure website, download it, install it and run it! It IS lousy!  Fallout 3 isn't even an online game, nevermind that it's purely single player!

Ok, so basically nothing happens when you press "home" in-game?

just a complain by the looks of it.

what i find strange is that last week when I re-installed my windows (& hence all my other software), I had zero trouble getting fallout 3, all the DLC & all my other GFWL games working perfectly.

Infact the only problems I have ever had with any GFWL titles are, issues with the first lot of DLC for fallout (which is bethesda issue with not having the game installed on the default location) & I did have some trouble getting universe at war to runa  few monts ago (& that turned out to be an issue with my windows install).

Am I anyone special, do I have any special PC skills?

nope, I'm just a guy who works in a retail store selling games & consoles for a living. Yet people who claim to be IT experts can't get a simple bit of software to run, just makes me roflol

Using another regions patch will not enable the Live client and manual patching is not always great. Have you even tried letting Live connect to download and install the correct patch? If you installed the patch yourself and it does not work a temporary fix would  be install the patch again before each load of the game it seems to work for some people that do not wish to reinstall completely again.

Yeap, got to love the people who claim to be experts after trying multiple things. Because clearly they become a expert after the given experience, so they think.
