After a few months of playing other games, I decided to give DoW 2 a try seeing as the latest update was now past an open beta phase.
But, after downloading the latest GFWL, installing this and that, changing my UPnP settings and even going into the registary I still can't connect. It gives the standard "Can't connect to LIVE, LIVE may be down or a firewall could be blocking access".
Now, I'm understandably annoyed at GFWL for causing this problem (seeing as you need GFWL to play multiplayer, while my internet is working compleatly fine, but GFWL isn't), Especially seeing as Mr Pirate probably doesn't have to put up with LIVE and can go play on some private server. (Speculation, but probably true).
So, he is a list of things I have tried:
Download Latest GFWL and install
Change UPnP settings to recommend ones
Change my MSU (or something similar) to 1500
Changed some registary things related to the MSU
Enabled Ports
Applied Hotfixes
Used auto-updates to have the lastest OS
Disabled Firewall
Disabled Anti-virus
Disabled both at the same time
None of those have worked. And that covers almost EVERYTHING in the faq's etc.
Also, it says I am "not signed in" to my Internet IP & my UPnP. I have a UK account that has worked before, so thats not it.
Have you tried method 1 & 2 of this thread. http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/785.aspx
I presume you mean this one, right?
Windows XP SP3
Step 1: Reset to Default Setting
While logged in as Administrator or Run 'As Administrator' open up a cmd.exe window
Start > Run > type CMD > Press OK
Type in CMD window:
netsh winsock reset <PRESS ENTER>
Reboot PC
Follow the same steps above to open a cmd.exe window and perform the following.
type:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt <PRESS ENTER>
Note When you run the reset command, it rewrites two registry keys that are used by TCP/IP. This has the same result as removing and reinstalling the protocol. The reset command rewrites the following two registry keys:
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCP\Parameters\
To run the manual command successfully, you must specify a file name for the log, in which the actions that netsh takes will be recorded. When you run the manual command, TCP/IP is reset and the actions that were taken are recorded in the log file, known as resetlog.txt which can be found in the root of the C: drive.
I haven't tried that, but I'm worried it could cause anti-virus problems, also would any name do for the file log?
Hey, same problem here, He detected Updates and told me to install, manually installed and he always finds updates (from which I suspect that he HAS connectivity) until the latest "hotfix" ... this hotfix messes things up and from this second on I receive "could not establish connection" errors. MTUs are fine, everything worked before, did all of the given steps for problem solution ... nothing! HELP!!!
GFWL seems to cause lots of problems for little gain. I've yet to talk to someone who has had NO issues with it, I mean this problem has no working solution, and yet its causing lots of people problems.
The only one I haven't tried has a 25% success rate and has a chance to screw up my Anti-Virus, those odds just aren't worth it, especially seeing as things like this need to be fixed in patches.
On that note
*BUMP*
I'm worried about missing the new free DLC now :(
Umm... whats the bump for? Specific question? Was the xp update a solution for you?
I was wondering if:
A) that was the correct method to use, and
B) if another "fix" had appeared.
Question is the same as said in the first post, "Cannot connect to DoW 2's LIVE after the latest update".
Yup, that method outlined was provided by another member of the LIVE team, so really that is your best bet. Are you still unable to connect? Have you tried that method?
Ok, after a (rather) delayed amount of time I finally got round to following the recommend advice (As the last stand is now out).
Anyway, long story short it fixed a problem I had been getting, Error Code: 0x800705b4. But didn't change the fact that I still can't sign in.
I also change my Router ports to allow a frankly massive amount of ports, all of which are included in ports which you should have open.
If I've missed any, please tell me.
PORTS: 1024-5000 UDP
So, on that note my problem is a standard "Can't connect, servers might be down or your internet might be broken" issue. I've tried connecting with Windows firewall off, and that doesn't work either. I even disabled Avast anti-virus and tried again, but that had no effect.
Which means it is probably a different problem, that is not firewall/anti-virus or the like related.
Steam The Baron:PORTS: 1024-5000 UDP
Opening that many UDP ports is not necessary. The port for logging in is a TCP not a UDP port. So that is another reason you cannot login.
GFWModerator:Open Port RequirementsThe following ports are required to be opened to use Games for Windows - LIVE. - TCP 80 - UDP 88 - UDP 3074 - TCP 3074 - UDP 53 - TCP 53 - TCP 443
These are the ports that need to be forwarded through your firewall. Adding more is just leaving you vulnerable.
Does your router support UPNP?
Ok, added the ports exactly, and will test DoW 2 now.
Also, yes my router does support UPNP, it allows me to turn it on/off, change "Advertisement period" and "Advertisement period to Live"
EDIT 1: Tried it, and got the saw issue where it takes ages for it to "connect", it then "retries" and doesn't connect at all.
Then it says it could be my internet/firewall or GFWL servers are down.
While you are in trouble shooting mode, you need to have any software security on the PC disabled or completely uninstalled. Make sure that the LIVE system on your PC is up to date to 3.0.19.0, and that Steam has fully updated DOW II to the latest version available. Which from this link says that a update was released 3 days ago . Also your OS needs to be up to date with the latest service packs, or any MS Net framework updates.
At the router level, enable UPNP. Then you have to enable it inside your OS.
· UPNP Instructions:
XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941206
Vista: Start -> Network -> at the top in the middle Network & Sharing Center -> Enable Network Discovery
If after this step UPNP is not working. Then open up services application in your OS. Go to the search box inside your start menu & search for "Services". Look for network discovery in the list of services. When you find it, make sure that the service is started, & not stopped.
Now try to login, but if it still does not work then try method 1 or 2 of this thread http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/785.aspx
Ok, I have Framework 3.5 XP (Which should be the latest, am not sure as new 2.0's have been released, which makes the whole thing confusing).
Did the UPNP thing, had no effect and everything was already working fine with it.
Also, I have GFWL 3.0.89, so I am going to download that. Will edit if it is a success.
Also latest DoW 2.
EDIT 1: GFWL seems to be latest version as v 3.0.19.0 is not downloadable anywhere I can see. I have the latest steam, DoW 2, OS and Microsoft .net Framework (At least I think for the framework). I still CANNOT log into GFWL from DoW 2. I have logged into the GFWL through my Hard-drive (C:/Program files/Microsoft Games for Windows Live/Client/*program) and so am sure that it is a fault contained within the game, not the firewall as I have said.
Am downloading latest drive, will make another note if THAT works.
EDIT 2: Driver didn't work, have noticed that no internet gateway appears in my network places, however I have a "Wireless Internet connection" which has the device name of my router.

Verify inside the settings of the guide that it is set to the device that is connected to the internet.
