Basic Voice Setup

  1. Log into a Games for Windows - Live title.
  2. Find and select Settings.
  3. Select Voice from the next menu.
  4. Select Voice Play Back Device.
  5. A new list will appear. Select the device that you wish to hear the voice come out from the list. (Most likely your headset.)
  6. Back in the Voice menu set the Playback Volume. (If you do not have a volume switch on your playback device you may not want it set to max. Also you can always come back to this part at any time if needed).
  7. Select Voice Recording Device.
  8. A new list will appear. Select the device that is your microphone on your headset. (It does not have to be USB to work).
  9. Back in the Voice menu, it is time to set up your Recording Volume & Voice Threshold. Make sure your microphone is not muted. Turn on your microphone and say something into it. Adjust the threshold to the point you are not being picked up all the time. No need to hear things such as low breathing. (Also, if needed revert back to sterp six and set your Playback Volume based on how you hear yourself).
  10. Select the Done button.

Due to the rise in people saying their headsets are not working, I decided to make a post of working and non-working list of headsets. People can add in all their info about their mics, experiences using the mic, steps to help set it up (or with their soundcards) for Games for Windows - Live, and other little small details about the mic. This will hopefully aid in the purchase of a headset and in solutions to getting the headset to work all bundled into one location. I will link individual reviews or guides made on how to set up to each headsets in this topic for quick reference.

If you have one of these mics and are still having issues try the following.

Option One

  • Make sure that Mute Microphone is unchecked, Recording Volume is all the way to the right, and Voice threshold is close to the far left.  (You can also go into the microphone settings in windows and up the microphone volume level.  Sometimes it is recording but it is just really soft).

Option Two

  • If your output device doesn't seem to be working try changing the device's setting from Surround Sound to Stereo.  In some rare cases this has fixed the issue.

Option Three

  • Make sure that your NAT type is 'Open' under Network Information.  If your Nat Type is 'Strict' or 'Moderate' then you may have issues getting a voice channel to and from other players while in game.

Option Four

  • If you have a 2nd output device (Headset or Speakers) try setting the voice output to that if your mic is working but you can't hear others.

Option Five

  • Go to the Games for Windows - Live titles you are having issues with shortcut.
  • Right click it and select Properties.
  • Select the Compatability tab.
  • Try running the game without any compatability mode. Uncheck "Run this program in compatability mode for".
  • Press the Ok button.

Option Six

  • Go to your motherboard makers or computers distributer website and download the latest onboard audio codecs.
  • If you are on the latest try rolling back your drivers or find a older version to install in place of it.

Option Seven

  • Go to the makers website of the codecs and download the latest drivers from them.

Option Eight

  • If the other two things fail go to your motherboards maker or computers distributer website and download the latest BIOS.
  • Warning: Flashing your BIOS can be good some times, but be sure to read possible instructions on how to flash your bios. I or anyone in this forums do not take responsibilty for any damage or problems that come from flashing your BIOS. If you corrupt your BIOS this is not our doing, you are the one to be held responsible.

These work - Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000

  • Optimized for Windows Live Messenger
  • Digital USB
  • Leatherette Ear Pads
  • Flexible Six-Foot Cable
  • Noise-canceling Microphone
  • Considered Plug N Play, but still comes with a Drivers CD.
  • Very comfortable to wear for extended use.

I enjoy using these and love the sound coming out of them. Seem to work better than onboard audio but dont have a soundcard so I cant compare to that.

Care to emphasize a little about your experience, and other little details about the headset. I know most Razer products for I own a keyboard & mouse from them I am using now, so I can say it has drivers. Though is that the one that has the ability to use USB or is this strickly a TRS connector style headset?

CW you sir are a champ.  I was working on tallying my own list but I like the idea of a public facing one for the community to use.  You sir get a sticky.

I also agree, the LX-3000 works great if only one flaw...

the cups actually "deaden" the sound from your surround almost too much, taking away the immersive experience, if that is something you enjoy.

But other than that, they are great.

A second one that works great is the Steelseries 3H Headset, at around $33-$49 USD depending on where you buy them.

They work through the front jacks of your computer, which means they are sound card dependent.

The bass is phenomenal, the mid and high ranges are adequate.

The mic works well, although it could have had about an inch or two longer boom, which was sacrificed due to the fact that it fully retracts into the left cup, speaking of which this headset is foldable for portability for you LAN party lovers.

The frequency range was among the largest I could find, even when compared to headsets 2-3 times as much money.

The 3d positioning for a stereo headset won't disappoint.

For ingame chat, they work great, albeit sometimes you will need to speak up due to the mic being on a short boom, but generally I've heard that the higher end sound cards can compensate for this somewhat.

These work well in LIVE enabled games, though sometimes you will need to turn game music or sound effects down to hear people over the earphones better.

For music they're adequate, for movies, the bass again delivers, but lacks somewhat in overall recreation of ambiance.

All in all, for the money, a great headset.

This is my primary mode of listening/speaking in game, as I usually play at night.  During the day I will switch over to my full custom surround system and LX-3000 for voice only.

If you were interested in using the 3H as voice only you would need to install a second audio card.

NOTE:  When using with a 5.1 or 7.1 sound card, you will need to switch to stereo mode (2.0) in order for them to operate as desired.

Here is a good full review of this headset.

If interested, you can buy them HERE.

Rest in peace Dad, we'll all miss you.

Nice review of the headsets Jack, now if I could only edit my post.

Thanks, great minds think alike as the saying goes. Would there be a place for this list for resources to add and link to? Perhaps if you have something to add from that list to move it along I know you can always edit it in. Moderating privilages are some times great, regardless of how little or many features you have acess to (All depending on the forum structure of course). Stick out tongue

As for the sticky, I would love to keep the sticky, but currently the editing a previous post in a sticky topic still persist. Currently, this makes it impossible for me to edit my previous posts to add in more headsets, information, links, etcetera. Making, the ideal of this post almost useless for me, if you could kindly remove the sticky and pass along this error to web design team much would be appreciated.

Combined post due to double post - Cw Elite Alien

Wish I did not have to double post, but I can not edit in the link to the error. It is the same one I was having last time in my one thread. I have a picture of it up at the link below.

Sennheiser PC155

  • Adjustable, bendable pivotable, noise cancelling microphone
  • In-line volume control and microphone mute switch
  • Single-sided cable including cable wind-up clip
  • Compatibility with CD/DVD/MP3 players and used with IP based communications
  • Integrated Sound card chip
  •

This headset has done me nothing but justice for going on three years now. When I bought it from Newegg.com back in 2007 I have not needed another headset since. I got it for around 80USD at the time since it was new, but it had all the features I needed, long cord with the cord control clip, mute switch, volume control, noise cancelling, and the ability to make it USB or plug into a sound card.

Noise cancelling microphones are awsome, or at lest this one is. I can sit about ten inches away from my 5.1 speakers and nothing picks up with it blazing. I talk a bit in private chats on the Live service when playing a game, and my buddies can swear by this mic they have not heard a thing, but one thing. That one thing was me burning in on Section 8, but nothing else has been heard in the stages of fighting.

Mute switches, this is just a must have in Games for Windows - Live, being there is no push to talk. My switch floats around my lap which is usally where I put my keyboard so it is a plug for me. I usally sit the switch on my Razer keyboards wrist rest. All I can say is be kind and mute when it comes to mics.

Volume controls, another great ability to have when you run into one of them kids screaming on while playing on the Live services. Not to mention when listening to music, I do not even need the volume up more than half way for it to be almost to loud.

USB, this use to be a big "no no" to me along time ago, I always wanted the cables pluged into my soundcard which is one reason I picked this mic since the USB connector was optional. Be that as it may the USB began to grow on me and to be honest it is fine on both, but I use it via USB these days.

Drivers, none of these can be found, this headset is strickly plug and play. Hassle free setup, just plug it in and set it up for all your programs and it works.

Where to buy, well you can not hardly find this headset cheap or unused since the newer models have kind of pushed it back, but I would reccommend Sennheiser products for they make very fine products. Although I can not say if they will work as good with Games for Windows - Live as this one. However, if they have not majorly changed anything I would say it should work just like the old ones.

Thanks goes out to Amazon.com for the images I posted, and details of the headset.
