This may be because i have windows 7, but when i install fallout 3 and then run it. It works. BUT!

Then when it says there is a an update for Live and I install it, the game crashes on restart. After that I will click run and it will black out the screen. Then the windows little circle shaped mouse loading icon thingy appears and the game crashes. It says that the game has stopped working. I can't figure out what is doing this.

Anyone that can give me assitance would be awesome

Could you provide the error it is giving?  Or if it is not displaying an error could you provide the event log info?

for me I started getting crashes just a couple of weeks ago, I had to edit the fallout.ini file to set the game to run off of only to cores of my quad core CPU.

I have no idea why this would be an issue, but it worked.

Here's what I did:

From the Web:

The game engine has some issues with processors that have more than 2 cores. You can force the game to only use two of them and it will stop the freezing. I haven't had it freeze once since I did this several days ago.

Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Find the line:

bUseThreadedAI=0

change it to:

bUseThreadedAI=1

Add another line after it and insert:

iNumHWThreads=2

This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

Obviously if you have a single core or dual core this will not help.

Other than that the logs GFWLMod asked for would be helpful, or any error messages you get upon crashing.

OK first of all Fallout 3 is buggy and crashes a lot here are some things that have helped others

Game Crashes upon Exit

Sometimes users will state that Fallout 3 will Crash/Stop Responding upon exit. A possible solution is to go in to the Options of the Fallout 3 Launcher.

  1. Start Fallout 3 from the desktop/game explorer icon
  2. Wait for the Fallout 3 Launcher to load (Pictured Below)
  3. Click "OPTIONS"
  4. Under Fallout 3 Options Check the box "Windowed" (Pictured Below)
  5. Click on "OK"
  6. From the Fallout 3 Launcher click "PLAY"

@MASTER99X

Have you tried running the game in windowed mode as I have suggested?
