Counting the money which they getting from Win 7.

The image which you show often reflect to you a lot.
Really.... what MS did:
- They closed one of the most damned succesfull gaming studios in the world (Ensemble), together with a lot of other more or less succesfull studios
- The games they give out those days are in general ports from consoles
- Windows sucks. If you want Windows to work OK, you need to know VERY well what you're doing, use tons of tools to fix giant holes in the security (since even patches from MS tends to create new leaks in the security) and have plenty of time to fix it.
So no, MS is doing a bit for PC, but not much

That happens to every OS that is being released. Even the beloved MAC OS and Linux is not secure. They will always be bugs forever and ever and happily ever after.
i dont post much here but i read almost all the news. but this particular topic gave me some
interest to write a reply.
anyway, ARE YOU KIDDING ME DUDE?
microsoft used to do a lot more for pc until the xbox came out. then they focused on that and
closed some pc centric studios/games. gfwl has been out for about 2.5 years and it still doenst
have out of the game chat, no way to check game achievements out of the game unless xbox.com,
no way to check whos online out of game unless xbox.com, . . .
they tried to charge 50 bucks for online multiplayer on PC? the service which was free even before
the first console to support online play came out (dreamcast - R.I.P).
and microsoft's biggest competitor, sony doesnt charge for online play.
i agree that if xbox players were to stop paying for live, eventually microsoft would make it free.
and personally, i think that microsoft wants to close down gfwl because they hate giving
things away for free but they cant close it down because there are so many games right
now that support live.

The closing of studios was to relieve some financial burdens within the company.. Microsoft may be making money in a few departments, but others are falling to the red and that was their solution. When your loosing altitude in a balloon, you don't hang on to your sandbags and bring down the whole balloon, you cut some weight to climb higher. The choices of what to cut are hard choices, but they were made for a reason and we aren't necessarily privy to those reasons.

Steam was out for 2 (2004) whole years before Half-Life 2 was released on their services and another year before they were releasing the version of the steam client that introduced a-la-carte purchases (2005).. heck, all those community features like chat and groups wasn't released until 2007. Thats 5 years later!

Times change and we are in an age where we DONT pay for products, but services. MS was right in thinking that people would ONE DAY pay for their services on a PC, they were just too early with it. Sony only offers free online to attract more customers to them. It was a business decision. One that would probably never have happened if they weren't worried that their units weren't selling enough. Its never wise to scare off the few customers you already have.
So I just finished reading the thread and I think there are lots of issues and obviously theres no way that every company can please every single person in existance.
If you think otherwise, well best of luck living in dreamland (while your there, say hi to Kirby for me, before he kicks your butt).
Personally, I am a Mac user, and I prefer Nintendo products, and the Xbox 360 compared to the PS3 and Windows. This is my decision, and I am entitled to it.
Saying that, I do not own a PS3 (for multiple reasons) but I do own a PS1, PS2, and I also own Windows XP and Windows 7.
When it boils down to it, it is all about PERSONAL PREFERENCE.
If I don't like a service, I don't use it. Simple as that. I do however make educated decisions about each product I choose to use or not use.
Even though i PREFER Mac's, I still own a gaming PC, and use GFWL, and Steam. Steam has been around for FAR longer than GFWL has, so understandably, GFWL has some issues that it is working through. Thats the KEY they ARE working on it, I've seen more updates this year for GFWL then ever before, and I'm assuming by the new client update that more will be coming soon.
When Steam first launched they had issues too. Just like any other company in existance.
If you can name me one company or corporation that has not EVER had a problem, and has satisfied EVER single customer or person dealing with them I'd LOVE to hear it.
Once service may considered be the best thing ever created for one user, and considered total and utter sh!7 by another user. It all depends on what we are looking for when determining what service or product we choose to use.
This isn't rocket science, but half of you on here are trying to make facts out of your Bu115h!7 claims. It all comes down to personal preference.
"Microsoft doesn't do enough for me, they should do more, why should we have to pay for a service when we consider it should be free? "
Turn the tables around on yourself. Lets put you, the consumer, in the place of Microsoft. (sort of)
lets say, you just started a coffee shop in your area. Before you even see a penny of profit or any money at all, you have to consider everything that needs to be paid for, gathered, installed, tested, and ensure safety and quality all while working off of a budget.
So how many things need to be paid for before even opening up shop? Well lets explore that shall we?-building rent + gas, hydro, water, etc-supplies (coffee makers, filters, counters, fridges, milk, cream, sugar, stir sticks, cups, lids, napkins, bags, cleaning supplies) and thats only if you serve JUST coffee (times this list by about 15 when you start adding food or snacks)-employees, training for the employees, managers, supervisors, coverage for the hours that it is open, uniforms, etc..-a beverage shop city permit for owning and operating a shop, which includes building inspectors, health inspectors, etc (and those guys dont work for free...)-technicians who can install and maintain your machines in the shop incase they break down-if they do break down, that is costing you money every second they are down-you'll also have to have contracts with your suppliers of products so that you constantly have quality products aligning with need of supply vs. demand-marketing: you'll need a great marketing plan or team in order to be effective and make an imopact in the market to prove your worth and create awareness
This is just a FRACTION of things to consider BEFORE even opening the shop, let alone maintaining operation costs, and financial setbacks or delays.
Now lets compare this to say, publishing and producing the game:
-when comparing this to say creating a game, you need a building to do R&D work in, that combined with the amount of electricity needed to power and run all of the computers, consoles, etc, will add up to a hell of a lot right away-you'll still need employees to do the research, and development, and their salaries which will be higher considering they will be coming from collage or university, not only employees, but supervisors, managers, site managers, programmers, testers, graphic artists, composers, language translators, project managers, HR, network co-coordinators, IT teams to keep the network up and running securely, and thats just what comes to mind.-supplies replies on the computers you choose to use(including maintenance), the internet services, or developmental services and products you purchase licenses for in order to use the product to develop the game, program it, debug it, test it, etc...-you'll still need to comply with building codes, and health and safety standards as well! With all of those cords for computers, you'll need to make sure your covered safety wise 100%, or I can guarentee you'll have a handful of lawsuits on your hands-you will definitely need a great marketing division to market your product to a client (microsoft, activision, THQ, etc...) because without the ability to sell your product to your client, you reach a dead end, and all the money you have invested in the project would be wasted, and gone.
and even if you game turns out to be a massive success on one platform, thats not to say that it will be a hit on every platform, or even financially viable to program FOR another platform (xbox LIVE vs GFWLIVE vs. Playstation Online, etc...) this is a big reason why GFWL doesn't have a massive game library. (at least right now)
Compared to the past 2 years that GFWL has been going, in the last year, there have been some heavy hitters that GFWL has brought on board (Batman Arkham Asylum, Street fighter IV, Fallout 3, Dirt 2 is coming out soon, Starwars the clone wars, etc...). When you consider this, I'd say the GFWL is taking a pretty huge step in the right direction. Of course there will be bugs and setbacks, but that's to be expected. Things happen, LIFE happens, if all your doing is nitpicking about something that YOU think someone or something personally owes you because they are expected to do so, then I'd hate to see how you live your life outside of gaming.
When it comes down to it, if you don't like something, then don't use it. If you like something, then ENJOY IT, send constructive feedback, not bashing emails that makes you look like a *** and make the people reading them want to smack you for your ignorance and arrogance.
As a user, if your not willing to help make a product or service better by sending feedback, then don't gets upset because its not the way YOU like it.Ultimately, its not YOUR company, product or service. Theres a reason why any company makes any decision. Its never just a snap decision. Especially a corporations like Microsoft, Sony, Steam, THQ, etc... you can believe me that every decision is reviewed by hundreds, even thousands of people (depending on the impact the decision may have) before a final decision is finalized and put into action.
For myself, I prefer to give most products a chance if it looks appealing, and generally functions as it is supposed to.
Keeping an open mind, will keep you open to a world of possibilities and change.
If you want to keep a closed mind, well, thers no one who can stop or or change your mind, because ultimately the decision is YOURS and YOURS ALONE...
Which once again all comes down to YOUR OWN PERSONAL PREFERENCE.
You have to learn to follow, before you can learn to lead.

Preach on !!!
AMEN!!!!
