I tried playing in a bot match and the same thing happened. This doesn't just happen to Shadowrun, I've also encountered this problem with Halo 2. Anybody have any solutions?

Shadowrun not starting.

So I recently bought Windows 7 and installed Shadowrun on it. Had no problems installing it but when I go to start up the game I will see the cursor loading, then it stops. Nothing happens after that. I then decided to try and do compatibility mode with Vista. This time when I tried to start it, it would give me an error saying "Unable to initialize Games for Windows components." I remember reading something where to fix this you install the latest patch for SR. When I tried doing that it gave me the same error.

I'm a bit stuck at this part. I have reinstalled both SR and Games for Windows. Neither has fixed it =(

Any ideas on fixing this? Also, is there anyone else on Windows 7 experiencing this problem?

Shadowrun 2 Petition

(Please visit the site to view this media)

* I don't think Smith & Tinker would actually make Shadowrun 2 a FPS......probably they would make it the classic, action role-playing game that it used to be originally.

Clip of FASA's canned Shadowrun emerges, was singeplayer reboot

http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/6044/clip-of-fasas-canned-shadowrun-emerges-was-singeplayer-reboot

Halo 3 Meets Shadowrun

Found this recently on the web

We all know there are places that still talk about this game, so I've decided to start a list, and by all means please post links to any that are missed.

Shadowrun Discussion on the Games for Windows site (here, duh, lol)

Shadowrun Thread on Xbox Forums

The Shadowrunners Hideout on GameSpot

Shadowrun Forum on GameSpot (yes there is two places on GameSpot)

Shadowrun The Blog on Hushed Casket (sadly was one of the better sites, but appears to be abandoned now)

Smith & Tinker linked only because they are now the owners of the Shadowrun IP (intellectual property)

Shadowrun Guide (link to paperback and electronic version on the PRIMA website

Shadowrun is Back (seems to be similar in concept to the MLG Shadowrun community, in fact may get a boost of members since rumor has it MLG is closing their Shadowrun forum) But I believe they are 360 biased there, I remember trying to join a tourney there and they were against PC users playing unless a handicap was agreed upon, since 360 users of Shadowrun think we have such a great advantage.

and for a giggle:

Well, that's all I can think of right now, I'll post more if I can remember them, or find others.

Shadowrun Machinima - Post it here if you can find it!

I wanted a catchall spot for any Shadowrun machinima that any of you can find. The most obvious that comes to mind is as far as I know the 1-800-MAGIC series from Rooster Teeth Productions, the creators of the infamous Red vs Blue series.

FASA Studio Founder Raises $29 Million for Smith & Tinker

Posted August 25, 2009 by James Brightman

You probably aren't too familiar with Smith & Tinker,
but you've likely heard of its CEO and co-founder Jordan Weisman,
former creative director for Microsoft's entertainment division and
founder of the now defunct FASA Studio (which developed games like Crimson Skies, MechCommander and Shadowrun).
Today the company announced that it's successfully raised $29 million
in venture capital, led by investments coming from Alsop Louie
Partners, DCM, Foundry Group, Leo Capital Holdings and Vulcan Capital.

This funding came in advance of the company's recent launch of its flagship product, Nanovor, which is sort of like a Pokemon monster battle game. Nanovor
apparently "draws players into an online world where nanoscopic
monsters, known as Nanovor, live and battle on silicon chips deep
inside computers. The game integrates multi-player PC gaming with
offline, handheld play on its proprietary device, the Nanoscope. This
next-generation game seamlessly integrates online and offline play
experiences, encourages face-to-face interaction, and enables kids to
battle their monsters anywhere and everywhere."

The company has plans to expand the franchise as well with weekly
animated webisodes, comics, a graphic novel, field guide and a retail
presence at Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Toys 'R Us among others.
Ultimately, Smith & Tinker believes that it's "reinventing play for
the connected generation... We see a future in which unconnected
products like toys, games, books and movies will not be able to compete
with the dynamic and exciting world of the internet."

"With the release of Nanovor, we have put a stake in the
ground as the first company to merge the best of a game studio,
entertainment shop and toy company all under one roof, and with the
sole mission of reinventing play for today's connected kids," commented
Weisman.

A friend of mine, Xenocidic, on the Xbox forums put this together. I thought it would be relevant to post here.

Hope you guys like it. (Here is the original post)

I am also hoping you will post any tips or strategies here as well.

There's been a lot of questions on how to unlock achievements, as
some of the explanations are vague, and some of the achievements can be
quirky. This is my fourth (and final) attempt to clear up the confusion.

Note this is being called v4.20, as
someone posted an achievement guide inappropriately titled v4.0, which
has nothing to do with my series of guides.

Thanks to anyone who explained these in other threads, or v1.0 , v2.0 & v3.0 of this thread, allowing me to compile this authoritative list.
Please feel free to chime in on the ones we're still a little unsure
about, post strategies for particular achievements, or ask for
clarifications if required. Your assistance in keeping this thread on
the first page would also be appreciated =). Here's hoping this final version is polished enough for a sticky...

General Information

* You must be connected to LIVE (except training achievements)
* You must be in a game with at least 4 actual gamertags on each team (bots do not count, nor does a 5v3, 6v2, etc.)
* Team kills do not count towards achievements such as Resurrector, or the "kill" achievements such as Elf Bane, Popgun, etc.
* Achievements do unlock even if the server quits before the end of the game (and any progress made towards achievements is registered).
( * paraphrased from http://forums.xbox.com/12993269/ShowPost.aspx )
- Achievements can be earned in private matches that fulfill the above requirements, unless stated otherwise in the achievement description. That being said, achievements should be earned, not boosted.

Achievements Explained

100 Wins (100) Win 100 games during your Shadowrun career.
This means games, not individual rounds. [ unclear if joining a game in progress after several rounds have already passed would grant the win , though I assume it does ]

3 for the Price of 1 (25) Kill three enemies with one grenade.
Hint: use enhanced vision to look for tight groups of enemies.
Possible quirk: I'm pretty sure that when
I unlocked this achievement, the grenade I threw only killed 2 people.
The third had been rezzed by one of those and bled out. can anyone else verify they got the achievement in this fashion?

Assistant (20) Get a 5:1 damage-to-kill ratio.
This means you dealt enough damage to kill "X" enemies but only killed "X div by 5" enemies
i.e. you either had a lot of your kills stolen or a lot of the damage
you dealt got healed. Under combat stats you can view your
damage integer for that game. Shoot (no pun intended) for at least 5.0 with only 1 kill or a similar ratio (10.0 to 2, etc).

BFF (20) Play Public Match in a Party with players on both XBox 360 and Windows Vista.
You need to party with someone playing on the opposite platform. Vista players on your friends list will have a PC icon next to their name.

Blowhard (10) Gust 5 enemies to their deaths.
Either gust them off a cliff or gust a smoked enemy to death. This is a career achievement (i.e. does not have to be completed in a single round/game). eck52 reported that shooting an enemy so they run off a ledge will also count towards this achievement. This
has been confirmed by myself as I got this achievement in a game that I
did not buy gust, but shot someone such that they fell to their death
i.e. game reported "Xenocidic forced n00bface to fall to their death".

Brother From Another Mother (20) Perform a cross-platform Resurrection.
Cross-platform means a 360 player rezzes a Windows Vista player or vice-versa.

Healer (10) Save your allies with the Tree of Life.
Heal 50 pips with your Trees of Life in one round (per Vigor cA). Health is divided into rectangular blocks - a pip is one block of life. Healing you do to yourself doesn't count towards this achievement. Throwing a tree for teammates who are bleeding out is a good way to work towards this achievement (per mattinater). Also, try to be the dedicated tree-thrower for your team.

Heavy Smoker (10) Ignore a great deal of damage using Smoke.
You must be in smoke for a total of 60 minutes. (confirmed by Vigor cA). This is quite obviously a career achievement. watch out for gusters!!! =)

Master Thief (25) Deliver the Artifact untouched despite heavy defense.
Score flag without taking damage and at least four enemies within 20m of the score zone (per Vigor cA).
tip from MaDzMaN , "Just try and do it on a map where there are various ways to get to the extraction point... I got mine on Maelstrom, i delivered it behind everyone by jumping up those 3 floating blocks that lead up to the VTOL..."

Mine Is The Superior Platform (50) Kill 100 players on the opposite platform.
If you are on 360, kill 100 Vista players and vice versa. If
you're having trouble finding 100 Vista players to kill, why not try
and borrow Shadowrun for PC from someone and kill 100 Xbox360 players?
=) Alternatively, try to arrange a private match of at least 4 360 players vs 4 Vista players. This would not be considered boosting as long as the matches were played legitimately, i.e. both teams attempt to win, etc.

Resurrector (10) Bring back one hundred allies from the dead
Pro tip: Practice using the B-radial menu to quickcast and resurrect enemies even while under heavy duress. Hold down B, move the left thumbstick left, and up-left and pull the right trigger to cast resurrect. This
way res does not take up a spot on your assigned buttons and you can
still get that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from being a good team
player.

Runner (10) Carry the Artifact all the way to the delivery point.
You must pick it up at the start location and deliver it the whole way. You cannot pick it up mid-way or drop it and re-pick it up. If
you're having trouble getting try using an elf with wired reflexes on
the first round of extraction and just make a mad dash for the flag.
Typically in the first round base defenses aren't shored up yet.

Small World (20) Play Public Match with players on both XBox 360 and Windows Vista.
You should get this achievement without effort as long as you're playing public matches. Vista players on your friends list are indicated by a PC icon next to their name.

Teleporter (10) Teleport one hundred times.
This is a career achievement i.e. you don't have to do it all in one game.

That's One Frustrated Sniper (10) Block ten sniper shots with Wired Reflexes.
Wired reflexes has to be assigned to be active. It will attempt to block the shot on its own as long as you are facing the sniper. This is a career achievement.

That Was Close (20) Kill the Artifact carrier less than ten meters from the delivery point, and win the round.
You
can either deliver the artifact yourself or eliminate the rest of the
team , as long as you've fulfilled the 10 meter requirement. For our American brothers, 10 meters is about 33 feet.

Unstoppable (50) Kill ten enemies in a row without being killed.
This will carry over from round to round and webnerd has reported that it carries over from game-to-game. Many people report having a lot of trouble getting this one to unlock. According to the official achievement FAQ, only initial kills count towards this achievement (not rezzed people on their second life). Furthermore, the counter is currently bugged and being reset if you die (a fix is in the works). Until the fix, once you kill 10 people on their first life without dying you need to not get killed (read: hide) until the game ends. Due to the initial kill requirement, I would suggest shooting for at least 15 kills and no deaths.

Well-Traveled (20) Play a Public Match on each map.
You must play both the small and large versions of the maps in order to unlock this achievement. Some claim that you must also win on each map, though I can't verify as I unlocked this achievement a while ago. This is one you shouldn't really stress about, it will happen on its own whilst you work towards other achievements. For a list of maps, go to matchmaking preferences.

You're Coming With Me (25) Avenge your own death!
This means you were rezzed and killed the person who killed you,
or you threw a grenade right before you died, and that grenade ended up
killing them, or any other combination of you being killed and
somehow killing that person after the game reports your death (in the
same round). Killing someone who has made you bleed out will not
count as you haven't actually died yet. Also note that if you kill
someone else simultaneously i.e. you both shot each other dead at the
same time , it won't count.

Zombie Scores! (20) Deliver the Artifact while bleeding out
Your rezzer is killed by an enemy and you deliver the artifact before bleeding out and dying yourself. Does
not work if you get mortally struck with a katana and then deliver it

suicide or your initial death was a team-kill.

Weapon Achievements

As a new feature,
I have included links below some of the weapon achievements. The linked
threads provide advice on using that particular weapon.

Master Blaster (10) Kill one hundred enemies with the Rocket Launcher.
http://forums.xbox.com/13119521/ShowPost.aspx

Popgun (20) Kill one hundred enemies with the Pistol.
http://forums.xbox.com/13188632/ShowPost.aspx

Sniper (20) Kill one hundred enemies with the Sniper Rifle.
http://forums.xbox.com/13094490/ShowPost.aspx
http://forums.xbox.com/13060254/ShowPost.aspx

Summoner (10) Kill one hundred enemies with your Minions.
http://forums.xbox.com/12701519/ShowPost.aspx
http://forums.xbox.com/13162160/ShowPost.aspx

Tatter Tatter (20) Kill one hundred enemies with the Rifle.
http://forums.xbox.com/13152324/ShowPost.aspx
http://forums.xbox.com/13191057/ShowPost.aspx

Target Lock (10) Kill one hundred enemies with SmartLink active.
http://forums.xbox.com/12889944/ShowPost.aspx

Lead Hose (20) Kill one hundred enemies with the Minigun.
Special Delivery (20) Kill one hundred enemies with Grenades.
Street Samurai (20) Kill one hundred enemies with the Katana.
Shotty (20) Kill one hundred enemies with the Shotgun.
There
haven't been any threads specifically on advice using the above four
weapons, but when there are, I will add them to my link compilation
thread here - http://forums.xbox.com/12860051/ShowPost.aspx

Notice the lack of SMG kill achievement...but for help on using the SMG, here's a link:
http://forums.xbox.com/13128294/ShowPost.aspx

Training Achievements

For all the training achievements you need to do the bot match and you must win the bot match game. The difficulty setting does not make a difference. (Apparently
you don't have to do the actual training, or so I've been told, I assume
as a nod to the beta testers who wouldn't need training)

Chapter 1 Training (10) Complete Chapter 1 Training.
Chapter 2 Training (10) Complete Chapter 2 Training.
Chapter 3 Training (10) Complete Chapter 3 Training.
Chapter 4 Training (10) Complete Chapter 4 Training.
Chapter 5 Training (10) Complete Chapter 5 Training.
Chapter 6 Training (10) Complete Chapter 6 Training.

Please note that the Vista version of this game has a glitch where you will not be able to actually complete one of the training missions, for this I suggest that you simply go to the associated bot match at the end of the training mission, and you will receive your achievement. -CptJack

Obtaining all six training achievements will unlock the Troll gamer picture.

Racial Achievements

Dwarf Scourge (10) Kill one hundred enemy Dwarves.
Elf Bane (10) Kill one hundred enemy Elves.
Trollhammer (10) Kill one hundred enemy Trolls
Here's a link to a thread entitled "How to kill a..." for general advice on taking down a particular race or build: http://forums.xbox.com/13195498/ShowPost.aspx.
Also visit my link compilation thread which has some links to threads of a similar nature
( http://forums.xbox.com/12860051/ShowPost.aspx )
Notice
the lack of a "Kill one hundred humans" achievement... The reason for
this is that humans are so overpowered that no one could possibly kill
100 humans in their lifetime. Nerf humans! ;>

The links below each of the following achievements are threads dedicated to playing that particular race

FASA Interactive founder Jordan Weisman has spoken out about Microsoft's acquisition of his highly-regarded studio, saying that the corporation "destroyed" its development culture and came close to doing the same with Halo developer Bungie.

"When Microsoft bought FASA Interactive and incorporated it into Microsoft... the two reasons they bought us was, one, they wanted the catalogue of intellectual properties and, two, they felt that we had developed a really good development culture. And the reality is that, pretty much from the day we moved to Redmond, that development culture was destroyed," Weisman told GamesIndustry.biz.

"I don't think the studio ever really had a chance. It was destroyed right in the beginning."

And Microsoft came close to repeating its mistakes with Bungie, added Weisman, who was working for the corporation as creative director at the time the Chicago-based studio was acquired.

"When we were acquiring Bungie, they wanted me to sit down with the owners of Bungie and tell them how well the transition went," he explained. "And it was like - 'what planet are you guys on?' This transition did not go well. And actually I became the lead vocal pain in the *** to get things done very different for Bungie.

"I tried to convince them to leave Bungie in Chicago, but not winning that I did succeed in getting them to put them in a walled off room, which didn't follow any of the other Microsoft stuff. We were much better able to defend Bungie's culture than we were FASA's culture."

Weisman established FASA, creators of the MechWarrior and Crimson Skies franchises, in 1980, and the company was subsequently merged with Virtual World Entertainment then acquired by Microsoft in 1999.

In 2007, FASA became one of the first studios closed by Microsoft as part of a series of cutbacks.

The reasons for this are clear for Weisman, who had already left the company to start up new venture WizKids by the time Microsoft pulled down the shutters on FASA.

They moved everybody into Microsoft's standard organisation, he said, and then changed his role so his staff were no longer reporting to him. "I was creative director for the entire group - all 300 people, not just the 60 that came with me from Chicago - so that didn't help either."

Since FASA's downfall, Weisman has successfully licensed some of his own IPs back from Microsoft and today plans to, in turn, licence them out to creative teams and publishers. The venture forms a part of his new company - Smith & Tinker - which yesterday announced it had successfully raised capital of USD 29 million to further fund its first release, Nanovor, and subsequent kids' entertainment projects.

The game designer plans to work with Vancouver-based studio Piranha Games to make a new MechWarrior title - "if we can put a deal together with a publisher - we're operating under some pretty tight restrictions of the licence that make publishing the games kind of challenging."

It's a situation Weisman admits is far from ideal.

"I guess one of the disadvantages to being old is that you outlive your children sometimes. And in this case, my children are owned by different people around the world and so it becomes a different kind of relationship."
