Ya I have had the same problem, and I am sick of this BS I am done with Fallout and Bethesda these pricks could care less (unless you are on an Xbox 360) so I'll spend my money on more reliable companies from now on.

I have thr problem that whenever I start up fallout 3, i get the question if I want to update, or I wont get signed in. If I select yes, the bar races to near its end and stops there. When i return half an hour later, its all gone. resart computer, restart game. nopped nade zilch!. I have a vista PC.

I tried a manual download. That confirmed being completed. I ran the progam. That did not work either.

I tried alt tab when it was within the game. that did not work either. anybody got any other idea's? I'd really like to play fallout 3 with accomplishments and now i get screwed again.

EDIT!:
I had to resort to download the new version from bethesda and open up my restrictions on the computer. I am unsure if thats what helped it, but here it goes:
(I am dutch so it might be different for some) goto
configurationscreen/ user accounts/ useraccounts enable or disable/ here i had to select not to protect my computer by UAC. that forced a restart. and bingo. after downloading and excecuting the program from bethesda and then signing in, t all worked!

I had the same issue, but was able to solve it by waiting for a very long time for the patch to start. Actually I went out to do stuff out of my home while having the "Please wait i'm updating screen", and when I went back the update was ready to roll.

Can you tell me which update message you are getting? Does it say it's an update for LIVE or an update for the "game?"

it just never finishs updating and then closes the game this also happen in UAW (universe at war)

Make sure that UAC is not poping up underneath the fallout3 game. Hold Alt Tab & switch to your desktop. If you are not using Vista, then your antivirus/firewall/spyware program may be blocking it.

When G4W updtaes, the bar almost gets to the very end and just sits there. I've updated the game and everything.

You will need to be forwarding the ports to the PC having connection issues.

The Live connection for Fallout 3 used to work but now it doesn't. I am having the issue described in this thread. I have tried to port forward like you said but it doesn't work. I also opened up all those ports in windows firewall.

Question: If I am opening ports do I direct them to the PC I am playng FO3 from (what I did) or do I direct the ports to the xbox itself? I have port 443 opened for another application on another machine so it is a pain to have to direct it to the FO3 machine every time just to play the game.

Is it really necessary to open up ports if I used to be able to connect - I mean whats so different that now all the sudden I have to fool around with port forwarding?

Most connection issues such as this are related to a few different problems

1) Verify that all ports are opened (Port list available here: http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/102.aspx) or circumvent the router entirely by connecting directly to your modem.
2) Ensure that allowances have been made in your firewall or circumvent it entirely by disabling it.
3) Make sure no programs are running that could interfere. This could range from security programs like Norton Internet Security to anti-virus programs, or simply other programs such as xfire or hamachi that seem to have some issues running simultaneously.

Oh sorry, it says there is an update for the game. I went to the Fallout website and got the latest patch and I am still getting the message

It’s giving me the same problem. When you start the game and then log into windows live you receive a message regarding a required update. After doing agreeing it does nothing. If choose not to update autosave is disabled. The latest versions of Fallout 3 and windows live are installed.
