I'm currently locked out of Games for Windows Live for Grand Theft Auto IV because of too many reinstallations and can only create an offline profile which will not have access to multiplayer or achivements.  I'm supposed to get a callback within 24 hours but have not received a callback.  I was on the phone with RockStar and they said to call Microsoft and then when I call Microsoft they turn around and tell me to call RockStar.  That's not fair because I paid $50 to own the game, not rent it.

Okay wow....so I called again and the lady said I have an email from GFW Live team. I was waiting for a phone call. So I check my email and this is it...

"Hello XXXX,

My name is XXXX, I'm with the Games For Windows LIVE Support Team

I've reviewed your case and to better assist you while getting you back to gaming we would require the following information:

-What version of Windows are you running (including any service packs)?
-What anti-virus, anti-spam, or internet security is installed on your computer?
-What exact error codes or messages, if any, are you receiving when trying to access?
-What is the best 2 hour time frame for us to call you at (between 10am and 10 pm EST)?
-How is your computer connected to the internet and what are the make and models or your router/modem?
-What is the name of the PC Live game you are having issues with?

If you do require further assistance, please reply to this email and either myself or another specialist will be more than happy to further assist you.
If the issue has already been resolved, please let us know that it has been resolved and how you resolved it."

WTF?>!?!?!?!?!?!??! I need my CD-Key reactivated dammit. I don't need to tell her my version of windows, what anti-virus I have and all that bullshit. I specifically said I get a message saying my CD-Key has been used too many times and I NEED it reactivated.

Is M$ tech support full of monkeys?! This is a complete mess. OMG.........I am a calm person but right now I feel like punching a wall. The lady said we have NO GFW Live phone team so I really don't know what the mod here was talking about. Even a supervisor can't do this. M$ brags about how much they care about PC gamers but we aren't even worth a tiny dept. for tech support? Wow...just wow.

You should just send an email to them bud. DON'T wait for a phone call. I have waited for three days and they sent me a e mail just now when I was promised a phone call 5 times!!! And given specific times. I cancelled whatever plans I have had for those.

Just wow...this is stupid.

Is the activation limit time-based or lifetime?

The limits will be removed in Version 3 of Games for Windows Live coming this summer according to http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Community/NewsArticles/Pages/gfwldrewinterview.aspx.  Edit: this link no longer works.

Instead of limiting the number of installs, just tie the CD key to only one account like in steam.

Hello FooFoo Jam,

I know the information may seen a little redundant but I can assure you that it is information that the Games for Windows Live Team does require in order to assist you. Can you please reply to this thread with your reference number because right now we can't assist you if we do not know who you are.

Regards,

GFWL Specialist.

I have recently uninstalled Grand Theft Auto IV and the Games for Windows Live software and deleted the C:\Users\Keith\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive folder and the HKCU\Software\Classes\Software\Microsoft\Xlive registry entry because the game is basically useless when I can't sign in.

Here is what I responded with:

The game is XXXX. The time you can call me is XXXXX. My error code is that I have exceeded my product key usage and need it reactivated or a new one. All that other information is not required.

Then enter your product key.

Wait for a phone call.

I finally received a new product key from a GFWL specialist named Tom. and it now works.  I was asked for the old product key and I gave it to the specialist via email.  I asked why they can't reactivate the old product key and they said they don't have access to the product key and how many times it was installed.  They don't have access to the database where the product key is stored.

Games for Windows Live uses a PC ID which is stored in the registry at HKCU\Software\Classes\Software\Microsoft\Xlive and if this key is deleted or I reformat the computer it uses up another activation.  The PC ID is also displayed in the network tab of the Games for Windows Live settings.  Each time Games for Windows Live is reinstalled it generates a random PC ID which counts toward the activation limit.
