I have uninstalled both the GFWL client and Fallout 3 game then reinstalled both. When I played the game the first time I was asked if I wanted to update by GFW. I accepted the update and after it downloaded I ran the patch. The patch completed ok and launched the game where I was able to access GFW and my DLC. Upon quitting the game it froze and failed to close down properly requiring Task Manager to shut the game down. Now when I launch the game from Game Explorer in Vista it launches but GFW does not launch with it. This means I cannot access GFW, my DLC or any of my saved games as the saved games are stored under my Gamertag. (As my saved games include the DLC content I cannot load them without Fallout 3 crashing when I get an Achievement because it cannot connect via GFW.)

I have the Fallout 3 UK edition and have purchased all the DLC for Fallout 3 to-date. My previous attempts to patch the game was by downloading the official Bethesda patches for UK version. From version 1.5 I started getting problems with accessing GFW from Fallout 3. The only way I could play the game was to keep launching the game via the 1.5 patch otherwise the game loaded with 'Continue', 'Load' and 'Downloads' being greyed out. 'LIVE' was not greyed out but clicking on it did nothing. Pressing 'HOME' did not work as GFW did not load.

Launching the GFWL client before launching the game does not help this issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,

I have the exact same problem. i just reinstalled to see if that would work and did a fresh update straight to 1.6 and i cannot get GFWL client up anymore. When i press the Live button in the menu it dosnt do anything. I have even tried my USB Xbox 360 controller to get it to show with no avail.

I tried to see if it was anything on my side but it isnt, i reinstalled to 1.0 Fallout 3 and booted it up, the GFWL worked fine, logged in, updated profile etc. (full updated from the 1.6 patch and uninstalled reinstalled from the GFWL website using that install file)

It only stops working when i use the 1.6 patch.

Do you two have the latest service packs to your OS? Also is the Net framework updated to 3.5? Maybe try patching the game with the US version & see if it is till broken. It is hard to believe that the updater is installing the wrong patch.

I have the latest version of Vista Home Premium with SP2. My .NET framework is 3.5 though I did note that it was patched by SP2.

Edit. Checked my installion of .NET framework and discovered it had been corrupted (Possibly by my antivirus software Virgin PCGuard as it considered the .NET framework installer to be a virus). Have repaired the installation and will try to play Fallout 3.

Repairing .NET framework did not fix the issue.

On a side note I did email Bethesda back when I had problems with the 1.5 patch and their latest solution was to contact Microsoft. Their previous solutions included doing a full uninstall of Fallout 3 including the DLC, restarting my PC then installing everything from the beginning. When that did not work they wanted me to uninstall all the DLCs again and then try installing each DLC seperately to see if that was the problem. Which meant with the DLC I had to redownload every time I wanted to install it again. I did query if their patch program was using any additional flags or switches when launching Fallout 3 after patching but did not get any answers on it.

I can play the game if I run the patch program and let it launch the game at the end. Though it still crashes on quitting requiring Task Manager to stop it.

why is it that you have to updated OS serivce pack, .net framework just to play a game?

I just purchased Fallout 3 on steam, updated it to 1.6 and everytime it loads it says I'm live offline. I enter my key via the GFWL box and it always says invalid? Why can't i register this game to and be connected on live?

Wilkz07 when you run the game have you pressed the HOME key to bring up the Games for Windows Live client? It should then ask you to login to LIVE after which LIVE should recognise FALLOUT 3.

You need to click try again when it prompts for falure. Make sure you are typing it in correctly. If you cannot get it to work then contact steam for help.

Go to your search box in the start menu. Search for "Services" look to see if Net framwork is stoped or started. Also if your antivirus program is blocking MS services from installing, it is not a good program, & sounds like a overzelous security program. Is it a security suite, or just a antivirus/spyware program?

I would uninstall that virus program. Reinstall net framwork.

Virgin Broadband PCGuard is the free security suite provided by my ISP VirginMedia (it comprises anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware, identity theft protection, parental control, pop-up blocker and privacy control modules).

Net framework was running correctly.

Like I said, it is most likely that program. It could be blocking the update files. I would uninstall that security suite. Uninstall fallout 3 & Games for windows redistributable. Start from scratch. Reintsall fallout 3. Update GFWL through the game. Then install the game update through the game after that. See what it does now.
