GFWLMod Posted: Fri, Oct 2 2009 4:11 PM

Ok, so we have people reporting Halo 2 Vista/Windows 7 not playing well together.  One of our users seems to have combed the posts and put together a little help post to get people up and playing if they are having this issue.  (http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/8000.aspx)

I however want to try to zero in on the cause a bit more, so I am making a new thread where hopefully I can gather all the people having said issue in one thread, for ease of browsing (users) and ease of data management (slightly lazy forum moderator)

So if you are having issues with Halo 2 running on Windows 7, in particular issues with the LIVE functionality I would appreciate you posting here with the following info:

Is the Windows 7 install a fresh install, or is it an upgrade?  If an upgrade from what edition? (NEW)

DxDiagLogFile (preferably as link or just post log)

The step by step process you followed for installing the game or the setuplog.

The steps you have taken to remedy it (reinstalling windows/LIVE client/Halo 2)

The error provided in event viewer when Halo2 crashes

The process list you have active when Halo2 crashes.

Run the following command in CMD (start -> run -> cmd) when you receive the error "tasklist /M xlive.dll" (no quotes) and post the results.

I know some of you have already provided this info, and it may seem odd to ask for it again, but this way there will be one thread where people can find all the needed info.

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay GFWLMod, I have to admit that when you first posted this I felt lazy at that moment and didn't want to go through the process again :P

Anyway, here's all the info I can gather for you.

- My DxDiag Logfile can be found here as a .txt: http://box.jisko.net/618425

- For installing the game I have tried two different methods: a) Instant play mode (where the game installs as you play the beginning) and b) Custom install. In both cases I have installed to the C: drive, but both methods give the same error (explained below).

- So far I have tried to reinstall the LIVE client (both the marketplace and the redistributable) and Halo 2 but to no avail. LIVE works great in my other 9 LIVE-enabled games (older ones like Gears of War and newer ones like Batman: AA). I do not want to reinstall Windows 7 since that would mean making a huge backup of over 250 GB of just personal files (not installs) and I simply do not have the patience to do it currently, sorry about that.

- Now, here's the error I'm getting when trying to play Halo 2 (it's the same even if I do the tray-and-play funcition or if I fully install first):

- Now I've logged the information provided by the event viewer in Windows 7 and this is the info I got:

- System

- Provider
[ Name] XLive
- EventID 2
[ Qualifiers] 32768
Level 3

0x80004005 Games for Windows - LIVE DLL C:\Windows\system32\msidcrl40.dll 5.000.737.6

- The process list is the following:

ApMsgFwd.exe
ApntEx.exe
Apoint.exe
atieclxx.exe
BluetoothHeadsetProxy.exe
BTStackServer.exe
BTTray.exe
CCC.exe
conhost.exe

taskhost.exe
taskmgr.exe
TnPCacheEngine.exe
twhirl.exe
VESMgrSub.exe
WMpTtray.exe
winlogon.exe
wmdc.exe
ZuneLauncher.exe

And finally, I've run the command "tasklist /M xlive.dll" and the CMD says the following (translated by me into English from Spanish):
"INFORMATION: there are no tasks running that match the specified criterion"

Well, there you go. A full list of details with everything you may need to know on the error.

I hope it helps!

EDIT: I'm using Windows 7 RTM by the way. I'm simply waiting for the free activation code that Sony is giving to its VAIO customers who bought their laptops recently.

mine has worked even better than on vista, no errors. installed full game first, then updated live. the only issue i had is a missing system file that was uninstalled by another program.

P.S. why do you have my h3 stats, it shows mine instead of yours?

GFWLMod, I don't know if you saw it, but I posted about a few other issues which seem to be related to this.

Apparently, the oldest LIVE games have trouble with the 3.0 update if it is not updated AFTER those games have been installed.

The same problem we're having here with Halo 2 is happening with Shadowrun (doesn't run at all) and Viva Piñata (the game works, but LIVE doesn't load and so renders it unable to load profiles and save games).

I don't know how far you can influence the LIVE team, but I think that with Windows 7 coming up in just 10 days they should really be trying to fix this as soon as possible.

Many people who get Windows 7 will do a clean install. If they happen to install a game other than Halo 2, Viva Piñata or Shadowrun first, the 3.0 update will be applied and those three games will not run. We're talking about three Microsoft published games here.

As far as I can see, the problem is that LIVE 3.0 doesn't run at all on those three games unless it is updated AFTER installation. Probably during Halo 2 installation, for example, the install is not copying all the LIVE files into the system because it detects LIVE 3.0 is already installed. However LIVE 3.0 must use some different files and as such does not install them either. Halo 2 is then left without the files it searches for before it starts playing.

This is just my theory though and I have no proof to back it up. It's just what seems logical to me (altough I'm not a computer technician).

I believe Windows 7's automatic game patches is bound to beccome useful here...

Anyway GFWLMod, please keep us updated on this matter!
Thanks!

Sorry for the double post, GFWLMod, but I just wanted to know if you have any updates on this.

Last thing I heard from you on the topic was that you hadn't managed to recreate the problem. Does the LIVE team know about this? Have you or anyone tried the problems with Shadowrun and Viva Piñata?

Thanks Smile

Sorry about not getting back to you sooner Anchel.  We are looking into this.  Lots of stuff tends to happen outside of these forums, so just because a LIVE team member has not commented on a thread does not mean we are ignoring it :)

Anchel:

Sorry for the double post, GFWLMod, but I just wanted to know if you have any updates on this.

Updates:  I was able to repro in house, I was also able to fix it again, and have since been unable to break it again.

Fix works for Shadowrun, Halo2 Vista, and Gears of War.

Uninstall affected game, delete all associated folders (will vary on game what is left behind, doing a search for the title will help you find whats left) uninstall:

Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE

Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable

Delete associated files (if they are still on computer after uninstalling previous 2 programs):

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\GFWLive

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE

Reinstall selected game, which will install the 1.0 version of the client, after finishing install connect to to Games for Windows - LIVE via the game.  The title will update and program will restart, it may depending on the game, ask you to update again next time you connect to LIVE, via the game, once done it will fix whichever title was not functioning properly, but you will need to uninstall any other games that were also affected.

Awesome GFWLMod!!

I'll try that this very same weekend if I get the chance!

So it did have something to do with LIVE 3.0 in the end.

I'll be able to give my feedback on those games as soon as possible, but right now I'm busy with (and I say this proudly :P) short movie I'm producing (we're shooting these days).

I just tried the steps you mentioned one by one with Halo 2, but unluckily I wasn't able to get it to work...

After uninstalling those LIVE apps, I deleted the two first folders (the one in Program Files doesn't appear for me after uninstalling).

Then I installed Halo 2 again and tried to run it, but I got the same error.

In the installed apps window in the Control Panel, there's now an app called "LIVE gaming on Windows Runtime Version 1.0.6027" though, which I suppose is LIVE 1.0.

I just hope that now I can safely restore my gamesaves for the other LIVE games as well as the DLC so that I don't have to donwload it again. (I made a backup of those LIVE folders as soon as I saw that one of them contained my DLC installs before deleting).

I'll try the process again though with Shadowrun and Viva Piñata to see if that fixes them.

GFWLMod:

Right so let me see if I have this straight before I do anything.

I have tonight upgraded my PC to windows 7 (just ran the upgrade option from my vista 64bit install)

Now I have most of the GFWL titles installed.

If I want to get shadowrun, Gears of War & halo to work I have to uninstall them, along with all my live data (which includes all my DLC), the live software & basically anything releating to live.

I then have to reinstall it all from scratch, which will burnout one of my allowed installs for each game.

as well as losing me my save games for Gears of War & halo 2 (never managed to get these to work from the files after a system re-install)

You've got to be kidding me right, there has to be a better fix than this in the works. You can't seriously be expecting customers to kill off one of the install limits because your own software (all 3 games in question are published by MS) doesn't work on your new OS
