You dont lose your saves if you reinstall the games.
Also, I tried reinstalling and doing all that other stuff, and it didnt work for me.
Also, see if the 3 games work before you reinstall, as h2v stopped working 1 day after i upgraded.

never managed to get a halo or Gears save to work after putting the backup files back after a re-install (I did say this in my post)

already checked them. None of them work.
Dawn of war 2 & red faction work. about to try the rest of my games
I knew this was gonna happen...
Windows 7 is out and three of Microsoft's own games don't work right.
I can't help it. I've been supporting LIVE for some time now, but having this big of an issue with three games is not something I can stand.
While it was the beta or the RC I could understand it. Fixing that was not the priority number one. But Windows 7 is out now, and customers will start getting this problem until a new LIVE update is released that fixes the problems mentioned here.
I'm going to start counting since October 22nd 'till the day it gets fixed. That might give us a realistic insight into how much MS cares for PC gamers.
I'm currently going through all my GFWL games & checking which ones work etc. I've had a couple of issues with some games, but I'll list those when I post up my list when I'm done
guys this is menat to be a tech support thread. if you want to have a discussion on the merrits of windows 7 etc, go make a seperate thread
On-topic - You can add The club to the list of games that doen't work. I've tried a re-install, but didn't uninstall the GFWL software too. Will try that tomorrow when I get back from work I suppose
SpectralRaziel: or you could carry on being ignorant by quoting around me again. seriously, all you do when you have a conversation like this in a tech support thread is make it harder for the people trying to offer the tech support. so either post something to help or GTFO of the thread

Chill mate.
Alright, on topic
I'm thinking of getting Win 7, do I have to uninstall all my games and crap. Plan on getting Win 7 Home upgrade.

that is what we are trying to work out. there are some issues (if you actually bothered to read the whole thread you'd know that), but people are trying to work out how to resolve them.
Don't worry I read. So its basicly the Windows Vista only games you can't run at all? When I was using the beta version, I could run both just fine.
Looks like its something to do with using the upgrade option rather than doing a fresh install of windows 7. seem some of the early GFWL games get a bit fubared in the upgrade process.
Well hopefully, MS can fix it quick, or else poor Jack can't play Shadowrun if he upgrades.

Not really. The problem we're having here has to do with Games for Windows LIVE 3.0 not working right with some games on Windows 7.
Apparently some of the earliest games try to open a file or a file version of LIVE that doesn't exist anymore on LIVE 3.0.
When you install Halo 2 as your first LIVE game for example, it installs LIVE 1.0 as well. Once you start playing, it upgrades to 3.0 automatically, but that file it looks for is already there since it came with LIVE 1.0.
If you install Halo 2 after, for example Batman or Fallout 3, the install won't copy the LIVE 1.0 files since it detects 3.0 already. So it simply doesn't run.
At least that's all the info I've been able to gather so far.
As for Windows 7, I recommend getting it if only because it's faster than Vista. For me it even runs some games noticiably faster, even at the time of the Windows 7 beta (Lost Planet and Devil May Cry 4, for example). You can always change the layout of the taskbar so it looks like XP/Vista without having to resort to third party applications, just with the appearance options.
EDIT:
By the way, I tried again the entire process with Shadowrun, but it didn't work. I even looked for every single piece of data in the Windows Registry that contained LIVE data. Shadowrun keeps refusing to run, doesn't even give any message, but the task manager shows the process running... and then closing itself after a few seconds.
Darkest, if you want to, you can add me as well on Windows Live Messenger. Mine is anchel [at] live.com
Anchel:
I started Halo 2 for the 2nd time on Windows 7 and I got this message. (pic) The first time I started it, it worked just fine, but when I started it again, it gave me this message. All my other LIVE games work just fine.
Games work on Windows 7. There are four reasons that the Halo 2 Vista error (0x80004005 something failed) would be thrown:
The most likely being that another program is currently using xlive.dllm but since I have asked that people run the check to see if anything else is currently using it, that is not the case. So, one of the following is likely true:· Xlive.dll and/or its accompanying catalog file have been tampered with. (thus, reinstall xlive)· Halo2 has been tampered with. (thus, reinstall the game)· Something is wrong with the signature validation system functions for this user’s machine that is causing it to fail. (reinstall Windows)
The method I outlined was not simply me throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what would stick, it's the exact method I followed to fix that error on my machine at the office. As people have stated the early Games for Windows - LIVE games do have some issues, but what I tried did fix it for my "clean" install of Win7. I admit I did check in the case of an upgrade, as people were having an issue after clean installs (or so I understood) so that is what I focused on. On my rig at home (where I am now) I will be installing Win 7 pro for my own use, but since I have a copy of vista ultimate lying around, I guess I can try doing an upgrade install and give it a good old college try to break it, though that will have to wait till my new hdd arrives.
But back to trying to get your guys games to work for you:
Anchel - You stated you followed the steps, so what exactly happened? When you uninstall those programs and delete the files the LIVE component is no longer on your system, so when you do an install of Halo2 it will install LIVE all over again, the first version being put on your system will then be upgraded the first time you try to connect to LIVE. So, since there are only four reasons this error can happen, and you have ruled out three (reinstalling LIVE via a clean install of Halo 2) the only other reason it could be thrown would be a signature validation issue.
When I get back in office tomorrow I will grab one of the devs and pick their brains.
