DarkestSoul X21:

[I'm thinking of getting Win 7, do I have to uninstall all my games and crap.  Plan on getting Win 7 Home upgrade.

Are you starting with Vista? If you are you should be good to go.  Although I can't be sure but that is the whole reason for upgrading.  We all know a fresh install can be better, but since you are going the upgrade route, just be sure to clean up your PC first. Delete what is not needed and check your system for errors etc.  I would even make sure all drivers etc. are updated first as well.

Good luck.

Well, I can assure you that I didn't tamper with xlive.dll in any way. I didn't even know that file existed until I started getting this problem. Halo 2 has not been tampered with either, since I'm doing clean installs of the game and even deleting all the related files I can find.

The signature validation system is something different. It could be that, I don't know for sure since I don't really understand what that is :P.

In any case if it has anything to do with the version of Windows 7 I'm using, I could add that I'm currently using the RTM version of Windows 7, and waiting for Sony to send me the free Windows 7 upgrade pack (with an activation code). It's supposed to arrive either this week or the next (altough I don't trust that kind of date - being Windows 7 such a new release and all).

I might do a clean install when the DVD arrives (if it allows me to because of the package being an upgrade kit). Maybe that could fix the problem? I'll post the results here so that it might help the devs find a solution for this.

Tampering in this case can refer to someone attempting to modify it, or there simply being an issue with the file.  As you said since you are doing clean installs it should work.  As for RTM being the issue, potentially?  I am on an enterprise version but I honestly do not know enough about the differeces in the nitty gritty of the os to be able to say "oh, well RTM is slightly different in the way that X"

They should be technically the same I believe (but I'm not the one to know best).

However, since I do not have an activation code yet (it'll arrive with the upgrade pack as I said) I'm using it within the 30 days period of grace that Windows 7 gives you (actually around 120 days if you use the legal way to extend the trial). With me being the kind of guy who loves trying out new things I just couldn't wait for Windows 7 to come out and I've been using the beta, RC and RTM ever since they were released. Since I know have a new VAIO laptop, the upgrade to Windows 7 comes for free (well... $25 of shipping fees, ouch!).

Spent some time with a dev today, we have been unable to repro, again.  if people could please provide all the information requested so that we have more data to work with (as we can't get it to happen again in house) it would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, here is more info.

I did a upgrade install, Halo 2 worked the first day. The only hardware i installed that first day was a 360 wireless controller.

Day 2: i get the error. I try everything in this thread and it doesnt help it. I posted my dxdiag. Also, I overclocked my CPU if that makes any difference, and it has been running h2v fine for months. And it also has been stable (no odd crashes).

And i am getting the error that gfwl failed to intialize.

The error provided in event viewer when Halo2 crashes

The process list you have active when Halo2 crashes.

Run the following command in CMD (start -> run -> cmd) when you receive the error "tasklist /M xlive.dll" (no quotes) and post the results.

Need as much info as possible as we cannot repro in house again.

No problem.

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools -> View Event Logs -> Windows Logs -> Application

Under application you will just look for the error and post up the info

Could be much easier than that. After all, it's Windows 7 we're talking about here.

Just press Windows Key (or click on the Windows Logo) and type "event". The event viewer will appear. If you have another language set in Windows, type "event" in your language.

This feature has been included with Windows since 2007. It's about time people started to make better use of it.  Wink

So, one of the following is likely true:
·         Xlive.dll and/or its accompanying catalog file have been tampered with. (thus, reinstall xlive)
·         Halo2 has been tampered with. (thus, reinstall the game)
·         Something is wrong with the signature validation system functions for this user’s machine that is causing it to fail. (reinstall Windows)

I've got the same issue, and I've tried all the solutions posted so far, but with no luck.  My Windows 7 is not an upgrade; this is a brand new factory built system that I got today, with a preinstall of Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).  I attempted numerous installs and reinstalls of GFWL and Halo 2.  I completely uninstalled Steam and all Steam apps, and all traces of GWFL and Halo 2.  I attempted to run with both GFWL 1.0 and the latest version.  I tried the "rename catroot2" process mentioned in a microsoft.com support article I found as a Google search result, which made it take longer for the GWFL to fail.

I can't imagine that in the 5 hours I've had this machine that the signature validation system could have been corrupted, especially since the last 3.5 of those hours have been devoted to installing Halo 2.  The only thing I can see is that no matter what I do, I am unable to even locate Xlive.dll - it doesn't seem to be a part of the GFWL install from the Halo 2 DVD.
